New Year in Lapland and Norway

This trip is for those who want to relax after a busy year, reflect on it, and immerse themselves in the kind of childhood holiday atmosphere you only see in movies. You’ll also get to discover snowshoeing, snowmobiling, and reindeer feeding, and try to catch the Northern Lights as we ring in the New Year above the Arctic Circle.

Here, you’ll feel the New Year’s magic that has lived within us since childhood—when the snow outside the window seemed different and the anticipation of the holiday was almost tangible. It returns naturally here: snow-covered landscapes stretch as far as the eye can see, and the frosty silence makes you believe in fairy tales once again. Nearby, at a Sami farm, real reindeer live—just like in cartoons, but here you can feed them right from your hand.

We are heading for five days to Kilpisjärvi, a remote corner of Finnish Lapland where the country borders both Sweden and Norway. It is a land of snow-dusted forests, frozen lakes, and the kind of silence found only in the Arctic. It is a time of polar nights and the Northern Lights in a place far removed from light and noise.

This is where we will bid farewell to the old year, enjoying the snowy scenery and relaxing in a house with its own sauna, and if we’re lucky, watching the Northern Lights right from our window.

Next, we spend two days in Tromsø, the "Arctic capital" of Norway, featuring a cable car over the fjords, scenic waterfronts, and cozy evenings in a city that has served as the gateway to the Arctic for polar explorers for centuries.

Day 1. December 29. The road to Kilpisjärvi and our first introduction

We meet at Tromsø airport and travel together to our house in Kilpisjärvi, which will be our sanctuary in the heart of a winter wonderland for the next five days. The three-hour drive through snow-covered forests is an experience in itself. Gradually, the silence that only exists in the Arctic settles in outside the window.

Kilpisjärvi is a tiny village in northern Finland, located where the country meets Sweden and Norway. Mount Saana looms over everything, impossible to miss even in the twilight of the polar night. This mountain is a landmark we will be able to see right from our house.

Upon arrival, we check in and take time to recover from the journey, unpack, and settle into the house that will be ours for the next few days. Then, we have our first dinner together. No agenda, no pressure to impress—just that feeling when strangers start to feel like friends in a single evening.

It’s a moment to exhale after the journey, the December rush, and the entire year, knowing that the next eight days belong entirely to you.

Day 2. December 30. Snowmobiling and sauna

The morning begins at a leisurely pace with breakfast together. Then, it’s time for snowmobiling.

We put on warm overalls, balaclavas, and mittens—the Arctic cold is no joke. You can choose what’s more comfortable: driving a snowmobile yourself or riding in a sled.

The route takes us across the frozen Lake Kilpisjärvi—a white expanse that seems to stretch to the horizon—and then deep into the snow-covered forest, where every branch is coated in frost as if someone had decorated the woods just for us. We head to the border of the three countries: Finland, Sweden, and Norway.

After the trip, we return to the house with a pleasant fatigue, rosy-cheeked and happy. In the evening, a sauna awaits to soothe our bodies after a day in the cold, followed by a warm dinner we can prepare together and conversations about the year gone by—all with that wonderful feeling of being truly present, with no work tasks looming ahead.

Day 3. December 31. Preparation and New Year’s Eve

Today’s morning is completely free—no alarms, no rushing. You can sleep in or join our morning yoga session: our guide is a certified yoga coach and will lead a practice for those who want to start the day mindfully. It’s the kind of morning where your only task is to take your time.

In the afternoon, we begin preparing for New Year’s Eve at the house. We’ll decorate the place together, ready to ring in the New Year in a few hours.

We suggest spending the evening in festive dresses—it’s a simple way to create a special mood and truly feel the moment. Together, we’ll prepare our favorite childhood New Year’s dishes and put on the movies we watch every year. Gradually, the house will fill with that pre-holiday spirit that seems to have lived within each of us since we were children.

Before midnight, we’ll take a moment to write a short reflection, expressing gratitude for the passing year and dreaming a little about the one about to begin. At midnight, we’ll make wishes and write letters to our future selves—the kind we’ll open in a year to see which of today’s dreams have come to life. There will also be a Secret Santa exchange with small surprises for one another. This is a night without loud music or crowds, surrounded by snowy nature and far from the bustle of the big city. And that is exactly why it will be remembered for a long time.

Day 4. January 1st. The post-holiday silence and meeting the reindeer

The first day of the new year is all about slowing down. If you like, we can visit a small family farm run by a Sami family that has been herding reindeer here in Kilpisjärvi for decades. It’s a genuine working farm where you can feed the reindeer by hand. The hosts will share stories about the annual grazing cycle, their traditions, and how Sami culture and reindeer life have been intertwined here for generations.

For those who prefer to stay at the house, that’s perfectly fine too. The day is intentionally planned without a rigid schedule for your comfort: you can spend it in the sauna, curled up with a book under a blanket, simply enjoying the quiet, or taking a walk through snowy Kilpisjärvi.

In the evening, we’ll all gather again to play games and chat. It’s the kind of evening where you can talk about everything or just sit in comfortable silence.

Day 5. January 2nd. Snowshoeing and Saana Mountain

The main event of the day is a snowshoe hike to Saana Mountain. Snowshoes are small, wide "skis" that attach over your boots to keep you from sinking into deep snow. There is truly a lot of it here—knee-deep in places—and it would be impossible to follow this route without them. We’ll spend three to four hours walking at a leisurely pace through the white silence, climbing higher and higher until the forest gives way to open slopes, revealing the entire valley: snow-capped peaks, the frozen lake below, and the horizon line.

This is our last night in Lapland, so we’re throwing a pajama party. We’ll prepare a warm farewell dinner—a space to recall everything that happened over these past few days: the snowmobiles, New Year’s Eve, the reindeer, the conversations in our women’s circle—and thank each other for this time together. Tomorrow, we head further on to Norway, but tonight, we just want to stay in the moment.

Day 6. January 3rd. The journey to Tromsø and our first dinner in the Arctic capital

The morning begins with our final breakfast in Lapland—leisurely and a bit nostalgic—before a transfer takes us to Norway. The journey transports us from a quiet Arctic village to a completely different rhythm: Tromsø, a city that has been called the "Gateway to the Arctic" for centuries. It was from here in the 19th century that polar expeditions would set off, stocking up on supplies before disappearing into the white expanse of the north.

Tromsø sits on a small island surrounded by mountains and fjords. Although it is the largest city in Northern Norway and the unofficial "Arctic capital," it remains surprisingly intimate and walkable. We’ll check into a house right in the center, where everything is within walking distance: the waterfront, the cafes, and the city lights, which seem almost festive in contrast to the darkness of Lapland.

In the evening, we’ll take our first walk through the new city—no rush, just to feel a different atmosphere and energy than the silence we’ve grown accustomed to over the last few days. Then, we’ll have dinner at a traditional local spot to sample some Arctic cuisine.

Day 7. January 4th. The cable car, getting to know Tromsø, and a city walk

The day begins with a ride on the cable car—a city landmark that whisks you above Tromsø in just a few minutes. The view from the top is worth waking up early for: you can see the entire city, the islands scattered across the fjord, and the surrounding mountains, which in winter are mostly hidden in the soft blue light of the polar night. There’s a cozy cafe at the top where you can warm up with a hot drink, gaze at the panorama for as long as you like, take incredible photos, and not have to rush anywhere.

After heading back down, we’ll have free time to walk along the waterfront and through the center. Tromsø is easy to explore on foot, and it’s here that you truly feel its history: 19th-century wooden houses stand side-by-side with modern buildings, and on the other side of the strait, you can see the silhouette of the Arctic Cathedral with its distinctive triangular roof. This city has been the "Gateway to the Arctic" for polar expeditions for centuries, and that spirit of discovery can be felt in every street.

Day 8. January 5th. Farewell in Tromsø

Our final morning begins just as leisurely as all the others: we’ll have breakfast, pack our things, and head to the airport.

The journey home is a chance to reflect on, discuss, and process everything that happened on this trip. Snowmobiles and the silence of a frozen lake in Lapland, New Year's Eve in festive dresses and a letter to your future self, mornings with reindeer, days and nights above the Arctic Circle, and a city by a fjord. And those women who were strangers a week ago are now part of a memory that will stay with you for a long time.

You will take home more than just photos and souvenirs; you will take a new year that has already begun mindfully and at your own pace. Just as you promised yourself.

We aren't saying goodbye, but rather: see you on the next trip!

This is a trip that combines the atmosphere of an Arctic winter, active adventures, and time to slow down and recharge.

Five days in a cozy house in the snowy landscape of Lapland — with snowmobiles, a sauna, snowshoes, leisurely mornings, yoga, year-end reflection, and a special New Year's celebration away from the city bustle.

And after the silence of Kilpisjärvi, a few days in Tromsø to change the pace and round off the trip with the atmosphere of an Arctic city. This is about a winter fairy tale, new experiences, a warm circle of women, and a beautiful start to the new year.
